This intriguing annual strikes an exotic note in borders, patio containers and arrangements of cut flowers, where its trailing burgundy blooms combine stylishly with foliage varieties. At the end of the season, the seeds provide a food source for garden birds. Flowers June to October. Planting sow under glass March April or in situ during May. Using moist compost, surface sow and cover lightly with vermiculite or compost. Keep at 20-25C to germinate, ensuring soil is kept damp. Transplant seedlings for hardening when large enough to handle, and plant out at 30cms spacing when all danger of frost is passed. Aftercare best grown in full sun. Pinch out growing tips to promote bushier growth, and support with stems if necessary. Eventual height & spread 120 60cms.
