This stately perennial is a great choice for the middle of a border, where its spires of purple-white flowers will stand proud above hummocks of attractive, mid-green foliage. It adds a feeling of coolness in any planting scheme and makes a fine cut flower. Flowers July August. Planting before planting, soak the seeds for 48 hours. Sow under cover, March May or September October, 5-10mm deep. Start off in a propagator or sealed polythene bag on a windowsill, as germination requires 20 30C, and can take 3 4 weeks. Prick out to individual pots when big enough to handle. Harden off seedlings, and transplant to final position 50cms apart after all threat of frost has passed. Aftercare cut faded flower spikes and feed and water to stimulate a second blooming. Eventual height & spread 90 60cms.
