StocksandGreen
The vivid orange lanterns of this valuable perennial make a stunning sight in summer borders. While the berries that they contain are unpleasantly sour, the stems are very popular with flower arrangements and can be dried for use out of season. Flowers July to September. Planting sow under glass February May in moist, well-drained compost. Leave the seeds uncovered as light aids germination. Place in a propagator or cover with polythene and keep at 18-21C. When seedlings appear, remove the cover to allow air circulation. Transplant seedlings into individual pots when large enough to handle, hardening them off prior to planting out at 60cms spacing, when all danger of frost has passed. Aftercare avoid feeding, as this encourages leaf growth at the expense of flowers. Eventual height & spread 75 45cms.
